In the fourth holding of the Global Views Magazine “University Social Responsibility (USR) Evaluation”, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology once again lived up to its ‘Green’ reputation, earning the top prize for the newly added ‘Outstanding Projects’ category in the Green Campus Group. Adding to this, Professor Yi-Lun Tsai of the NPUST Veterinary Transfusion Medicine Center won the ‘Model Award’ for her project, “Guarding Warm-Blooded Warriors and the Happiness of Pets”, which was submitted under Welfare and Symbiosis Group.
NPUST President Chin-Lung Chang explained that NPUST is a comprehensive university with its main axis of development centered on agriculture. It’s hopes are that through scientific and technological progress, it will be able to share more environmentally friendly farming methods with society and use its campus as a giant laboratory for testing and promoting green measures. With affirmation from Global Visions Magazine lending additional support, NPUST will continue to strive towards environmental sustainability, develop more and better applications for renewable energy, and work to share them with the public.
Professor Tsai’s project made use of the professional equipment at the NPUST veterinary teaching hospital to create an open and transparent blood donation and transfusion system, allowing canines to donate blood safely without sedating them. The system is designed to ensure that the dogs receiving medical treatment can get blood from qualified pairs in a timely manner. Hopes are that their open and transparent model will reduce concerns that dogs are being raised to make profits in this area and that they can help create a society where the well-being of humans and animals can be shared.
NPUST’s contributions to green development are continuously earning recognition. For the past nine years, it has been No. 1 in Taiwan on the GreenMetric World University Ranking. It has also firmly held on to the No. 3 ranking in all of Asia on the same ranking, year after year. The school hopes that through the power of education, students and teachers will be able to produce, live, and co-prosper with nature in a healthy and integrated way.
