The “Green Island Marine Ecological Restoration Action Project” was been launched by a group of likeminded organizations including the Fisheries Agency (MOA), the Green Island District Fisheries Association, Academia Sinica Green Island Research Station, National Science Council Green Island Station, Taiwan Ocean Conservation and Fisheries Sustainability Foundation, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) Aquaculture Conservation Center, and Business Today magazine.
The first activity under the project was held on April 16 (2024) with 53 diving instructors volunteering to help release 2,000 fish in the Shilang Conservation Area on Green Island. The types of fish that were released included 2 species of clownfish, 8 species of damselfish, and 1 species of angelfish. The fry appeared in good health and adapted quickly to the local environment. In the future, the operations will continue with Academia Sinica conducting tracking and monitoring in the area.
The fry which were used to help repopulate the conservation area were provided by the NPUST Aquaculture Conservation Center. Distinguished Professor Yu-hung Lin, who works at the center, is actively participating in the ecological restoration project. With many years of professional breeding experience, he prepared and conditioned the precious coral reef fish prior to their release at the selected coral reefs. The conditioning at the center was designed to help get the fish accustomed to living in a symbiotic environment, so they could enter the natural environment in the best of health and continue to flourish in their new home.
